yaoi is anime or manga focused on realtionships between two guys
yuri is anime or manga focused on realtionships between two girls

yaoi is more popular because is has more of a fan base with the girls, and is even more popular than hentai (anime/manga porn) because hentai is more graphic and focuses more on the sex.

yaoi/yuri stories are more about how the two characters in question meet, realize they're in love with one another, start a realtionship and how that relationship withstands any opposition from other people. sometimes that means dissaproves but more times than not, it means there's a third character who wants one of the two characters and there's this big love triangle thing going on,
